Parian Poet's Pitcher, Union Porcelain Works
American (Brooklyn, New York), last quarter 19th century. A parian pitcher designed by Karl Muller (1820-1887) for Union Porcelain Works, of hexagonal form, each paneled side featuring the profile portrait medallion of a poet set within a laurel wreath and surrounded by related decoration, on a slightly domed foot with band of guilloche ornament, marked under foot. Poets represented are Dante, Shakespeare, Ossian, Milton, Virgil and Homer; ht. 8.25 in. (at handle).
Karl L.H. Muller, a German sculptor, was hired as the chief designer of Union Porcelain Works in 1874, specifically in preparation for the Centennial Exposition. The original "Poet's Pitcher", now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, was designed in 1875 and exhibited the following year at the American Institute Fair. It is not known how many of these pitchers were created.
Several portrait medallions are cracking along back of head. Multiple splits in handle and one in neck.
