Silver gelatin photograph, 10.375 x 13.25 in., on original 16 x 20 in. mount with blindstamp of Place & Coover, Chicago at top left corner. Framed, 20 x 24 in. Ca 1899-1900.
Rarely encountered large format photograph of little person, Mrs. Tom Thumb, whose maiden name was Lavinia Warren, (1841-1918). She married Tom Thumb, the famed Barnum performer in 1863, and countless photographs of their "Fairy Wedding" were produced to document the occasion. The union was also recognized in newspapers and magazines of the day, such as Harper's Weekly. The front page of Harper's February 21, 1863 issue featuring an illustration of the married couple is affixed to the back of the photograph offered here. The pair achieved great fame and wealth through P.T. Barnum. In 1885, two years after Tom Thumb's death, Lavinia married Italian little person and actor Count Primo Magri, and the two performed together through the early 20th century.
Even toning to print. Some light spotting on photo, heavier spotting on mount. Few slight surface abrasions on photograph along perimeter. Some wear to mount, including few areas of loss, some light stains.
