Cleveland, Ohio, 1920s. Two magic posters depicting George "The Supreme Master of Magic" from his "Triumphant American Tour" with mystic and exotic imagery; 38 x 24.25 in. (sight), 41.25 x 27.5 in. (frame) AND 38.5 x 25 in. (sight), 41.75 x 28.5 in. (frame).
Grover George was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1887. He worked his way up from performing in small towns until he came to the attention of Howard Thurston, the most renowned magician in the United States at the time. Thurston attempted to sue George and went so far as to pay theaters not to let him perform in order to maintain his position as the nation's most famed illusionist. These antics lead to the end of George's American tour and drove him to tour in Central and South America instead.Both mounted to board. Not examined outside of frame.
