Pont, Charles E. (1898-1971). Acrylic on board, 14.5 x 15.25 in. including margins, signed lower right, Charles E. Pont. Partially printed paper tag affixed upper left identifying the artwork as the cover for the March 1952 issue of Yachting Magazine. A vibrant depiction of a yacht out on a moonlit cruise, with palm trees swaying on the shoreline in the foreground.
French-born Swiss-American Charles E. Pont was both an itinerant Baptist minister and prolific artist, specializing in oil, watercolor, ink, and printmaking. He primarily focused on nautical themes, as illustrated in this painting he produced for Yachting Magazine. Pont's artwork resides in a number of prominent collections, including the Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, Navy Department in Washington DC, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition, he is recognized for his accomplishments in graphic design, including magazine and book illustration.
