Printed broadside, 4.25 x 8 in., promoting the "Fast and Elegant Steamship Santiago de Cuba, Jerry W. Smith, Esq. Commander," of the "Opposition Line for California via Nicaragua." New York: Francis Hart & Co., 1866. With illustration of steamship at center.
Originally a civilian steamship, the Santiago de Cuba was built in 1856 at New York City for commercial use but was purchased by the US Navy in September 1861, converted to a cruiser and commissioned as USS Santiago de Cuba two months later. She was subsequently sent to the Gulf of Mexico area to enforce the blockade of the Confederate States and protect American shipping and proved to be a highly successful blockader, capturing several blockade runners throughout the duration of the war. Most notably, in December 1864 and January 1865, she participated in the two attacks that ultimately captured Fort Fisher, North Carolina, which led to the end of most Atlantic Coast blockade running. After being decommissioned in June 1865 and sold at auction the following September, the Santiago de Cuba returned to commercial employment, operating as a steamship for the next two decades.
