The Gazette of the United States & Philadelphia Daily Advertiser. Philadelphia: Wednesday Evening, December 18, 1799. Vol. XV, No. 2258. 4pp, 13.5 x 20 in.
Page 3 with black mourning border around the entire page, with a mourning-ruled box at the top of column 4 giving credit to the December 16 Times of Alexandria, and reading: "It is our mournful duty first to announce to our Country and to the World, the death of General George Washington." The paper then lists the time of death as around 11:00pm Saturday evening, and the cause a "violent inflammatory affection of the throat" known as the Cyanche, or Quinzy.
Philadelphia was serving as the nation's capital at the time. When the news first arrived in the city from Mount Vernon earlier in the day, and before it could be put into print in the Gazette, the paper reports it was announced in front of the House of Representatives by General Marshall, at which point the House and Senate both adjourned. Also included is a transcription of a letter from a witness in Alexandria, dated December 15, reporting on the circumstances of the death, beginning: "Alas! our WASHINGTON, our brave, our virtuous and our wise Commander in Chief, is no more!!"
