Old Abe the War Eagle was a bald eagle who became the mascot for the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. During the war, he was in more than 30 battles and became a unifying symbol for the Union Army. After the war, he remained in Wisconsin living at the state capitol.

The chromolithograph shows Abe in front of several battle flags - 9th Iowa, Second Kansas Batt'y., Second Wisconsin, Seventh Missouri, Second Kansas Reg't., and First Ohio Batt'y.
