Pony Express rider, frontier scout, buffalo hunter, and showman extraordinaire, William F. Cody (1846-1917) was many things in his colorful life – but above all he was “Buffalo Bill,” and American icon who became a legend in his own time.
Buffalo Bill Cody came by his catchy nickname because of his marked success at hunting buffalo to supply meat for construction crews building the Kansas-Pacific Railway. Later, he would guide eastern millionaires and European royalty on elaborate, luxury trophy hunts for buffalo.
This painting illustrates his hunting technique -- riding full-out to the head of the herd, pressing the leaders, and bringing them down one by one. The herd would then split off to the left, and were soon circling, so he could pick them off one at a time as each beast started away from the circle. When there was enough meat on the ground for the hungry railroad men, he would disengage. It was extremely dangerous work that required almost super-human riding and shooting skills. To those who witnesses Buffalo Bill Cody in action, it was awe-inspiring and they never forgot it.
The weapon he is depicted using in the painting is a Winchester Model 1866 saddle-ring carbine, presented to him at Fort McPherson, Kansas, 1870. The rifle is on display at the Owsley-Brown-Frazier Historical Arms Museum, Louisville, Kentucky. The engraving on it reads: “Presented to W.F. Cody, Champion Buffalo Hunter.”
