Soldier, statesman, lawman, rancher, author, big game hunter, conservationist and 26th president of the United States. Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the most popular national figure of his time. His is one of only four presidential images that grace Mount Rushmore.
It was not only the immense energy he brought to political office that made him so popular, or his unshakable moral convictions or his image as a war hero who led the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. It was the fact that, although born into privilege, he was a man with a common touch. Theodore Roosevelt was loved by the American people because he loved them.
All of his life Teddy Roosevelt was a man of the outdoors. While he was an avid hunter, eh also realized a need to conserve American’s wildlife and their natural habitat. He was a Founder of the venerable Boone and Crockett Club which is dedicated to the conservation of game animals and their habitat.
It is Theodore Roosevelt, the outdoorsman, which is portrayed in this painting. He is depicted on one of his many hunting trips to the American Northwest, circa early 1900’s. His quarry is the bull moose, his favorite game animal. He was a skilled tracker, expert rider, and fine marksman, attributes that are evident in the painting.
The rifle he is using is a gold-plated Winchester Model 92. This rifle is on display in the Owsley-Brown-Frazier Historical Arms Museum, Louisville, Kentucky.
