Depicts the destruction at Ypres with buildings in ruins and barren trees dotting the wreckage.
After the deadly Third Battle of Ypres fought between German and Allied forces in 1917, the city was nearly obliterated. Ypres was an important site because it served as a barrier to the planned German sweep across Belgium into France. Neither the Allies nor the Germans wanted to give any ground, and in the Third Battle of Ypres, both sides sacrificed nearly half a million casualties in their efforts. After three battles and a shallow victory for the Allies, the historically rich town was laid in ruins, to be rebuilt after the war with money from German reparations payments. Ypres subsequently took on a kind of spiritual significance for the British because of the sacrifice and suffering of so many of their soldiers at the site. Today a museum, the In Flanders Fields Museum, stands at Ypres to memorialize the town's role in the Great War.
