From the golden age of Dutch cartography, this wonderful depiction of the world as known then shows all major continents, including a coastline of Antarctica at the bottom. The lower corners show polar views - North and South. A large cartouche with depictions of native peoples holding it up labeled "America."
Across the top are the major "planets" - Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Across the bottom are the seven classical wonders of the world - Hanging Gardens of Babylon; Colossus of Rhodes; Pyramids; Mausoleum at Halicarnassus; Temple of Artemis/Diana; Statue of Zeus at Olympia; and Lighthouse at Alexandria. Along the left side are the elements - Fire (Ignis), Air (Aer), Water (Aqua), Earth (Terra). And along the right are the seasons - Spring (Ver), Summer (Aestas), Autumn, Winter (Hyems).
Several small compass roses, many ships and sea creatures, real and mythical, and many locations on the land masses are also included.
