North Carolina Long Rifle Signed DG
.40 caliber, 45.5" pinned octagonal barrel, no S/N. Browned finish, brass furniture, hardwood full stock. Flat rounded flint lock with roller frizzen and fenced waterproof pan, marked N MELCHIOR / WARRANTED is likely a replacement. Rifle is reconverted to flint. Barrel signed D*G in script. Double set triggers. Engraved four-piece patch box, with two screw side plate and toe plate engraved with the same simple floral and geometric motifs. Stock with raised carved cheek piece with brass vent pick holder and loose Rococo carving on butt. Carved molding along forend with German silver false wedges, carved molding around lock, terminating in arrow finials. Carved apron around breech plug tang with leaf motif, terminating in a leaf finial. German silver thumb plate at wrist and oval cheek rest inlay. 2.4375" brass nose cap, three faceted brass thimbles and a faceted brass entry pipe, no ramrod present. Consignor notes attribute this rifle to David Gross, who worked in Guilford County, NC ca 1805 (Sellers). However, comparison with known Gross guns suggests that this is by another maker. A very similar rifle signed "DG" and depicted as rifle #58 in William Ivey's North Carolina Schools of Long Rifles 1765-1865 suggest that maker of this gun was from the Rowan School of rifle makers, likely in the North Carolina Piedmont area. A really lovely North Carolina rifle from the first quarter of the 19th century.
Very good. Metal with mottled brown and gray patina with some surface oxidation and light pitting. Moderate pitting around breech attests to the time this rifle spent as a percussion gun. Some vise marks are present around the breech area and the tang shows some minor vise damage as well. Lock with moderate pitting, remaining mechanically functional, 7-groove bore very good with crisp rifling and scattered pitting. Brass with a medium golden patina, German silver with a thick, uncleaned patina. Stock very good showing scattered bumps, dings, impact marks and mars. A small repair is present at the toe, some pins in the forend are replaced and others are missing.Condition
