Stylized Horse
bronze
initialed on tail
ht. 7.75, wd. 10 in.
Norman Kohlhepp showcased a variety of skills, and on the occasion of a 2010 exhibition of papers and photographs from his archive, the Filson Historical Society in Louisville aptly described him as a "Renaissance Man." A native of Louisville, Kohlhepp graduated from the city's Manual Training High School before continuing his studies at the University of Cincinnati in metallurgical engineering. He worked for a while in Boston at the General Fireproofing Company, and enlisted as a mechanic during WW1. After the Great War, he focused his talent on the fine arts, and took advantage of the educational resources available in Paris: he attended the Académie Colarossie as well as the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and most formatively, studied under cubist painter André Lhote. Back in the United States, Kohlhepp dedicated a lot of time and attention to the arts and culture of his hometown of Louisville. His work has been exihibited at the Speed Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
This bronze horse is a rare object to surface at auction. Kohlhepp is known for his horse-related imagery, but mostly in the media of oil and print. This sculpture is reminiscent of the streamlined and stylized forms of modernism, to which Kohlhepp is indebted thanks to his Parisian education.
