Standard 1858 pattern forage cap with an 5" top disk, with 6" rise at rear and 4.25" rise at front. 2" crescent-shaped tarred leather visor with a .6" wide very thin and brittle tarred leather chin strap with a sheet brass buckle that is retained by a pair of NY State Artillery (NYSA) cuff sized buttons. The cap is made of indigo blued dyed wool broad cloth with the lining of the cap a thin, light brown, cotton twill sheeting. A 1.25" leather sweat band is sewn into the interior. A false embroidered, stamped metal officer of artillery, crossed cannon cap badge, measuring roughly 2.5"x1.6" is attached to the crown of the cap, along with the sheet brass battery letter J. A very nice, possibly privately purchased and officer worn New York State Artillery forage cap in a high state of preservation that would be a wonderful addition to any Civil War collection.
