New England Queen Anne High Chest
American (New England), ca 1730-1740. A Queen Anne high chest in sycamore with pine secondary, the upper case having a molded cornice and map drawer above three dovetailed and graduated long drawers, the faces thumb-molded and fitted with engraved brass pulls and escutcheons, over applied waist molding, the lower case with a second strip of waist molding above three aligned, thumb-molded, and dovetailed drawers, over a shaped apron with drop pendants and shaped sides, all rising on tall, slender cabriole legs ending in pad on disc feet; ht. 69.25, wd. 38.25, dp. 22.75 in.
The underside of the map drawer retains an old note with printed letterhead for Chas. A. Fitts, / Furniture, Carpets and Draperies, / Furnishing Undertaker. / Northampton, / Mass. and addressed to Mrs C McClellan / Jefferson / N.H. / 8-19-02. The inscription reading Dear Madam, / Replying to yours of / the 18th. I learn from Mr. Tardiff / that the High Boy came from / Hadley, Mass. from a house / built in 18th century 1767... / ...and was furnished in / 1774-5 by a lawyer who was great / grandfather to the parties he pur- / chased it of. The house has / recently been torn down and / a library is being erected upon the / site, which is opp. the town hall. / CA Fitts. There is another inscription in the upper margin reading Sycamore High Boy. bought of Felice Tardiff in Northampton / & given to B. Tardiff(?)...Ja.(?) 3. 1902.
Provenance: Purchased by the consignor from Kemble's in Norwich, Ohio in 1997. Previously purchased from a private collector in eastern Pennsylvania.
Some minor surface wear and imperfections as would be expected with age and use. Some small chips and repairs to drawer lips. Some small age splits. Small repair to skirt near right rear knee return. Bottom drawer of upper section with a scratch near lower, right edge. Refinished but it appears to have some age. Drop finials and drawer pulls replaced.
