- Lot Description
New England Flintlock Rifle
.51 caliber, 39.5" wedge-retained octagonal barrel with hook breech, no S/N. Browned finish, brass furniture, hardwood stock. Flat commercial flint lock marked WARRANTED with engraved sunbursts and panoplies of arms at the tail. Integral rounded, fenced and bridled waterproof pan, roller frizzen, engraved flat, faceted swan neck cock. Rifle appears to be in original flint configuration and not reconverted from percussion. Frizzen steel appears to be an old replacement, top jaw and screw may be as well. Lightly engraved four-piece Daisy Head brass patchbox, brass buttplate, triggerguard, single screw side plate, nose cap and diamond shaped wedge escutcheons. Fixed rear sight, dovetailed front sight blade, three faceted brass pipes, wood ramrod. Full stock with raised cheek rest and checkered wrist, having a German silver shield-shaped escutcheon at wrist.
Very good. Barrel cleaned to bright with traces of finish underneath, showing scattered surface oxidation and age discoloration and some light pitting around the breech and muzzle. Brass with a medium golden patina. Lock mechanically functional, bore good with deep, 6-groove rifling and scattered light to moderate pitting. Stock very good, solid with scattered bumps and dings and some repaired cracks in the forend. The lower two barrel wedges are missing and a couple of the wedge escutcheons are loose, one is missing one of its attachment pins. Ramrod is a replacement.Condition
