.58 CF, 36" round barrel secured by three barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Breech loading alteration to cartridge from original muzzle loading configuration performed on a Bridesburg contract US M-1864 Rifle Musket, dated 1864 on the altered lock. Correct M-1864 rear sight, sling swivels, incorrect ramrod. Includes a US M-1855 socket bayonet.
Some 4,200 surplus US M-1861/63/64 rifle muskets were acquired by the Irish-American Fenian society for their proposed invasion of Canada in 1866. The invasion was a total failure and easily repulsed. Not to be dissuaded, the group managed to raise additional funds to have their arms altered from muzzle loading to breech loading cartridge configuration using the Needham system ca 1869, with a new invasion attempt planned for the following year. This attempt resulted in similar catastrophic failure for the Fenians. In all slightly more than 5,000 rifle muskets were altered using this system, most with at least a peripheral connection to this little known part of the Irish nationalist struggle for home rule.
