- Lot Description
Michaux, Francois Andre and Nuttall, Thomas. THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA, OR, A DESCRIPTION OF THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, AND NOVA SCOTIA: considered particularly with respect to their use in the arts, and their introduction into commerce : to which is added a description of the most useful of the European forest trees. Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith, 1854. First combined edition of Michaux and Nuttall, later printing. 6 volumes; 10 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches in original gilt stamped cloth bindings; complete with 156 hand-colored plates to the Michaux and 121 hand-colored plates to the Nuttal (together 277 plates). Vols. 4-6 have title: "The North American sylva; or, A description of the forest trees ... not described in the work of F. Andrew Michaux ... By Thomas Nuttall." The first volume of Michaux covers pines and firs, walnut and hickories; the second volume presents 20 different oaks, with maples, birches, beeches, chestnuts, and nyssas among other groups; and the third volume documents the magnolias along with ribinias, the tulip tree, the catalpa and others. The three Nuttall volumes cover some tree left out of Michaux as well as adding new descriptions of trees from Oregon, California and the Rocky Mountains where Michaux did not explore and collect." Ex-library set but with minimal markings - bookplate to pastedowns and library roundstamp to the upper right corner of each title page; closed tear to text at page 27 of volume 3; bindings quite worn and rubbed -- plates clean and fresh with vibrant coloring throughout.Condition
