Founded in October of 1836 by request of Massachusetts Governor Edward Everett, the National Lancers are one of the oldest existing organized militia units in the United States. Initially organized as an armed escort for the Governor, the National Lancers would serve in the Civil War as part of the Army of the Potomac, seeing action at some of the largest battles in the war. They also participated in the defense of Boston during the 1863 draft riots, where they prevented rioters from seizing the artillery armory. The Lancers also participated in the Pancho Villa Expedition and were part of the American Expeditionary Force during World War One. After the war they were absorbed by the Massachusetts National Guard, with the ceremonial element being adopted officially into the Organized Massachusetts Militia in 1964. Today, the Lancers retain their ceremonial duties as well as being activated for search and rescue operations. They also continue to serve in a security role, being activated to provide security to Camp Curtis Guild during the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In Massachusetts, the Lancers are known for their annual recreation of the midnight ride of Paul Revere and William Dawes.
