- Lot Description
American (New York and New Hampshire). A four-finger Shaker sewing box with bentwood handle and silk interior from the Mount Lebanon Shaker Village in New Lebanon, New York, and a four-finger box with traces of red paint and illegible writing on lid from the Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury, New Hampshire; sewing box ht. 3.25, lg. 8, wd. 5.5 in., box ht. 2, lg. 5.5, wd. 3.5 in.
These pieces were made in the Northeast, but were used by Shakers at Union Village in Warren County, Ohio. They were given to Edward C. Pence (1861-1931), the last farm manager for the Union Village community. Pence and his wife, Lida (1869-1953), lived at the South Family with their daughter Leontine (1895-1971) until the community closed in 1910. These pieces, and others, descended in the family to the present day.
