Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1916, l.l.; 95.5 x 50 in. (canvas); 106.5 x 61 in. (with frame).
A Swiss native, Rudolf Tschudi is best known for his landscapes and historical portraiture. Tschudi participated in the St. Louis Exposition of 1904 and was an active member of the Cincinnati Art Club. This monumental portrait, along with a similarly sized portrait of Abraham Lincoln in this same sale, might have been executed for the 1916 Presidential election pitting Woodrow Wilson against Charles Evans Hughes.
