Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1916, l.r. Inscribed From a Photograph made 1860 / By Geo. B. Ayers. Philadelphia; 50 x 95.5 in. (canvas); 61 x 106.5 in. (with frame).
A fanciful scene from one of the Senate debates between Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, who is seen here in the lower left just by Lincoln's elbow. The portrait of Lincoln is loosely based on a bust photograph taken on June 3, 1860 in Springfield, Illinois by Alexander Hesler of Chicago. Hesler later sold his negatives from the sitting to George Ayres of Philadelphia. Given the scale of this painting, it might have been accomplished as a campaign piece for the 1916 Presidential election pitting Woodrow Wilson against Charles Evans Hughes.
