Monumental Carved Patriotic Eagle
American, cherry, ca third-quarter 19th century. A monumental and finely carved spread-winged eagle of patriotic interest, the eagle with a left-facing head fitted with glass eyes and portrayed with an open beak and a polychrome-painted, red tongue, its delicately stippled feet and sharp talons grip a bundle of arrow shafts on the left and a twelve-star shield draped with a gilt olive branch on the right, all rising on a stump-form base attached to a turned, wood socle; ht. 32, wd. 52.25, dp. 15.5 in.
According to family tradition, this eagle was removed from a bank in Northern Ohio.
An outstanding example of patriotic art.
Some small chips and minor age splits. Loss to one side of tail feathers with a break to one talon. Some flaking to paint in mouth. Old repair to tip of eagle's right wing.
