The Helena Daily Herald. Helena, MT: Fisk Bros., July 13, 1876. Vol. 18, No. 129, 4pp, 18 x 24 in. Featuring the front page headline "THE INDIAN WAR" and an extensive report on the Battle of Little Big Horn which had occurred over two weeks earlier on June 25-26, 1876.
Published by Andrew and Robert Fisk, brothers of famed Union soldier and expeditionary leader James. L. Fisk. James Fisk led four expeditions from Minnesota to Montana in his efforts to promote the settlement of the western United States, and he along with this brothers were prominent citizens in the Montana region. At the time of this paper, Helena was the capital of the Montana Territory, and in the midst of a gold boom. The ongoing Indian Wars were of great interest to the American public, and especially to the settlers in the Montana Territory where hostilities were taking place.
With a full two columns on the front page and more content on the back page, extensive details are offered about the battle. "Official Reports of the Number Killed, Wounded and Missing." "The Indians at the Agencies Mourning for their Lost." "Terrible Scenes on the Battle Field on the Little Horn." "Gen. Terry's Command Falls Back to the Base." It is apparent that new information continues to become available, "Still More of the Custer Massacre," as the pubic tries to make sense of the stunning defeat. "Special dispatches to nearly all the papers confirm the dreadful defeat and massacre of the Custer forces. It appears that his command and Reno's attacked the camp at different moments, losing the moral effect of a simultaneous attack."
A wonderful accounting of the Battle of the Little Big Horn in a rare Old West paper.
