- Lot Description
Model 1896 Springfield Carbine
.30-40 Krag caliber, 22" barrel, S/N 68407 . Blued and case hardened finish, smooth, straight-gripped, finger-grooved walnut stock with single sight-protecting barrel band and short handguard. Receiver marked: MODEL 1896, U.S./SPRINGFIELD and with serial number. Weak shadow of a cartouche at wrist and legible [circle]-P proof behind double-struck triggerguard. 1896 pattern rear sight graduated to " 20 " and with ladder correctly marked " C ". Knurled, mushroom-shaped cocking knob, sling bar and ring, smooth buttplate with trapdoor for cleaning rods which are not present. A very nice example of a Spanish American War-era Krag carbine. Interestingly, # 68401 and # 68414 are recorded in the Springfield Research Service serial number books as having been issued to the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry.
Very good to fine. Retains much of the blued finish on the barrel, with scattered surface oxidation and freckling present. Receiver with faded and dulled colors and surface freckling as well. Markings in metal crisp, marks in wood less clear. Mechanically functional, very good bore with some frosting and lightly scattered pinpricking. Stock with wear, very lightly sanded and showing numerous small bumps, dings and mars, as well as a small crack in the handguard behind the rear sight.Condition
