Model 1873 Springfield Rifle
.45-70 caliber, 32.625" barrel with two barrel bands, S/N 65801 . Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut stock. Standard early Springfield lock markings with 1873 date and early small sized barrel proofs. Early 1873 breech bock mark with crossed arrows, clear ESA in an oval cartouche on reverse of stock without date and good [circle]-P proof behind triggerguard. Long wrist, short comb stock, high arch breech, smooth trigger, 2-click tumbler. Correct 1873 rear sight, musket front sight/bayonet lug, retains stacking and both sling swivels as well as an original 1st pattern M1873 leather sling constructed from two surplus Civil War slings. Solid buttplate without trapdoor or implement compartment.
Very good. Retains some blue with fading and wear, mixed with a gently oxidizing plum-brown patina. Traces of case color on breech block. Markings clear and legible throughout. Mechanically functional, very good bore that needs to be cleaned. Rear sight missing tension spring. Stock with scattered bumps and dings and showing light to moderate wear.Condition
