- Lot Description
.58 caliber, 40" round barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Lock marked in three lines U (EAGLE) S / PROVIDENCE TOOL Co / PROVIDENCE, RI and dated 1864. Matching date on breech with V/P/(Eagle Head) proofs. Correct Providence Tool eagle head with beak pointed towards breech, correct Providence Tool "shadowed" US mark on lock and buttplate tang. Correct CRM and OWA cartouches on stock flat. Correct 1861 pattern rear sight, sling swivels, original ramrod. Providence Tool delivered some 70,000 US M-1861 rifle muskets on three contracts, dated July 23, 1861, November 26, 1861 and May 1, 1864. This gun one of the 32,000 delivered against the first two contracts with the early style lock markings and 1861 pattern rear sight.
Very good to fine overall. All markings clear and crisp. Metal with a slightly mottled appearance due to scattered surface oxidation. Very good bore, with scattered light pitting and crisp rifling. Mechanically functional. Wood crisp with fine cartouches and the usual scattered bumps and dings from handling and use. Overall a very crisp example of a Civil War 1861 contract rifle musket.Condition
