Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon with Merrill Breechloading Alteration
.69 caliber, 26" barrel. "V P" and eagle proofs on barrel near the breech. Rear three-leaf sight is reversed. Marked on the top of the breechloading lever JAS Merrill Balto Patented July 1858 in three lines. Lockplate marked eagle and "U.S." The rear of lockplate marked Springfield and dated 1848. Swivel ramrod; buttstock has the lead weight behind the buttplate in the cavity of the stock. Brass triggerguard has a third screw that was added to give the stock strength; with this type of breechloading system, the stock was weakened and it would break through the wrist. Brass mounted walnut stock with cavalry sling bar. Only 100 of these cavalry musketoons were contracted. (See: George D. Moller. American Military Shoulder Arms. 2012: pp 232-233.)
Provenance: A.C. Daum
Barrel is in the white with some very light scattering of light pitting. Markings are very sharp and crisp. Rear three-leaf sight retains most of the original blue finish. Lockplate is very sharp and crisp with excellent markings. Hammer is bright and sharp and crisp with a light speckling of pitting. Brass mounts with nice patina. Stock is excellent, with an outstanding "JS" cartouche. Trigger still retains most of the blue finish. Stock shows an old repair in the center of the buttstock at buttplate due to the weigh in the buttstock. This lead weight, if not cleaned properly, would corrode and cause the stock to split. It also shows old evidence of a repair through the wrist. Stock has nice feathered grain look with some nicks and dings. There are only four of these musketoons known in collections - and two are in this sale.
