- Lot Description
.69 caliber, 38" barrel retained by three barrel bands, bright finish, walnut stock. Standard Starr markings on lock, dated 1832 at tail with matching date on breech plug tang. Lock remains in original flint configuration. Barrel with usual proofs and sub-inspection marks, weak cartouches on counterpane and comb of stock. Retains both sling swivels and the bayonet lug has been re-set on the top of the barrel 1.125" from the muzzle. While not conforming exactly to the classic definition of an "official" artillery musket of the period, the shortening appears to be arsenal quality work, with exceptional quality of fit and finish, including filling the original band spring mortise slots and re-cutting them for the relocated bands, installing the bayonet lug correctly, etc. One of the few examples of a shortened military musket that this cataloger has seen that appears to be completely authentic and period altered.
Good. Metal with an oxidized brown patina, and some scattered surface roughness. Mechanically functional, dirty bore, reproduction ramrod. Stock with a crack running through the lock mortise area, less visible on the outside than in the mortise itself, also numerous bumps, dings and scuffs.Condition
