- Lot Description
.69 caliber, 42" barrel secured by three bands, brown finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked US/P&EW Blake forward of the hammer, and NEW HAVEN in an arc over the date 1828 at the tail. Side plate engraved with the rack markings SFB no 51, the meaning of which is unknown. Lock reconverted to flint. No visible marks on the barrel due to pitting. Stock with two weak cartouches on the counterpane. Retains both sling swivels and an original iron ramrod. P & EW Blake were the nephews of Eli Whitney, who operated his arms manufactory from the time of his death until Eli Jr. was able to take over the running of the facility.
Good. Barrel with a heavily oxidized brown patina and evenly distributed moderate pitting. Furniture with less pitting and oxidation. Mechanically functional, fair bore. Stock with numerous bumps, dings and mars and some added finish.Condition
