.69 caliber rifled, 42" barrel secured by 3 flat bands, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Lock marked in three lines behind the hammer: Remington's / Herkimer / N.Y. / U.S. / 1855. Breech plug tang dated 1857. Alphanumeric bayonet mating code N 80 present on upper barrel band and breech plug tang. Primer door marked PVH. Correct 1855 pattern long-range rear sight, correctly modified ramrod for use with elongated ball ammunition. Sling swivels. Includes correct pattern US M-1816 replacement socket bayonet and .69 caliber wooden tampion.
Approximately 20,000 US M-1816 muskets were altered to percussion via the Maynard Tape priming system at Frankford Arsenal between 1856 and 1858. The locks and patent breeches were produced by Remington, and installed at Frankford, where long-range where sights were added and the barrels were rifled. According to Flayderman, only the very earliest Remington locks were marked Herkimer rather than Ilion, and he estimates as few as 50 locks were so marked. This is an extremely scarce variation of these US arsenal alterations of M-1816 flintlock muskets.
