Founded April 20, 1865, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States was formed by the commissioned officers charged with the guarding of President Abraham Lincoln's remains as they arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania en route to Springfield, Illinois. With Lincoln's brutal assassination and the presence of Confederate armies still in the field throwing the nation into a new period of dangerous uncertainty, the founding members of the order renewed their pledges of unwavering loyalty to the Union. Notable members of the organization included Generals William Tecumseh Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, and Douglas MacArthur. The organization continues in the modern day as a hereditary fraternal organization.
John Titcomb enlisted as a Sergeant in the 113th Illinois Infantry on October 1, 1862. He served with the 113th through their wartime service including actions at Vicksburg which earned the regiment five Medals of Honor. In 1865 he was promoted to Captain of Company E of the 88th US Colored Infantry. The 88th was formed February 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee. They served in the defenses of Memphis where they participated in multiple actions against Confederate raids until July 1865, when they were transferred to the 2nd Infantry Brigade, District of West Tennessee. They were then transferred to the Department of Tennessee until December 16, 1865 when they consolidated with the 3rd US Colored Heavy Artillery. Titcomb survived the war and mustered out with the rank of Captain. He was a member of the Colorado Commandery of the Order. He died in Colorado in 1908.
Special thanks to Adam Flint, Chancellor-in-Chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States for his help in identifying the badge of Captain Titcomb.
Very good condition. Badge is bright with some stains on the enamel. Issue number (8187) is clear and legible with pin in good working order. Some stains and dirt on the ribbon.
