8x57, 28.4" barrel, S/N 27038. Blued and painted finish. Receiver cover engraved in five lines: 27038 / M.G.08. / D.W.M. / Berlin / 1917. Matching numbers throughout, with parts marked with the last 4, last 3 or last 2 digits of the serial number, and the two-piece cocking mechanism marked 70 and 38. Many parts are DWM marked as well. The gun is missing most of the internal parts of the firing mechanism, including but not limited to the bolt, bolt carrier, and associated small parts. Additionally, the long-range tangent sight has a broken adjustment leaf. Checkered wood grips are numbered to the gun. No mount is included with the gun. The water cooled MG08 machine gun was the mainstay of the German army's arsenal of automatic weapons during WWI, and was probably responsible for more battlefield injuries and deaths than any other weapon during the Great War. Although the gun is not currently mechanically functional, and requires a significant investment in time and effort to get it up and running it is a fully transferable MG08 that can be a functional machine gun after a complete restoration. For the advanced Class III collector or dealer with the facility to complete the restoration, this gun represents a potential money making opportunity, considering the low auction estimate assessed to this transferable MG08. For any serious Great War collector, the MG08 is the ultimate piece ot add to your display of First World War firearms.
Fully transferable on ATF Form 4.
