Hand-colored, printed broadside cartoon, 34 x 22 in. Villa at Any Price. New York: New Process Electro Corporation, 1916.
A satirical cartoon commenting on the Mexican Border War, specifically the US government's immediate military reaction following Pancho Villa's attack on the United States in March 1916. The government was determined to bring the raider to justice. Unfortunately, despite the actions of Brigadier General Pershing and his horse-mounted column of Regular Army Soldiers, which journeyed into Mexico less than a week after the attack to find Villa, the raider proved to be elusive.
This cartoon portrays Uncle Sam and a pack of leashed war dogs chasing after Pancho Villa, who is dragging a tattered American flag behind him as he retreats with a band of armed men into the forest.
Toning to the outer margins as well as some damage to the top margin of the broadside,
