Lot Description

Gross, S. D. (M.D.) A MANUAL OF MILITARY SURGERY; OR, HINTS ON THE EMERGENCIES OF FIELD, CAMP, AND HOSPITAL PRACTICE ILLUSTRATED WITH WOOD CUTS. Philadelphia: J.D. Lippincott & Co., 1862. 2nd Edition. viii, (9) - 186; plus 16 pages of ads. 6 by 4 inches in original blindstamped brown cloth with gilt titling to spine. With the manuscript ownership identification on the front free endpage: "Dr. George W. Shields U.S.S. Victory 8th District Mississippi Squadron Via Cairo-ILLs." The U.S.S. Victory was a Union gunboat built at Cincinnati and placed into service on the Ohio River at the time of Morgan's Raid and the boat participated right away in the chase of Morgan. The first edition of Gross's Manual was 1861 and it achieved great popularity on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. This printing is very scarce in the trade; and, oddly, does not seem to be recorded in OCLC. RUTKO GS49.

Condition

With staining, wear and puckering, mainly to the upper cover; gilt titling to spine nearly faded away. Lacks one rear free endpage (of 2). Ownership inscription to front free endpage is strong, in ink.
