Lot Description

Warren, John Collins. ANATOMICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE ARTERIES OF THE HUMAN BODY, ILLUSTRATED BY SEVERAL COLOURED ENGRAVINGS, SELECTED AND REDUCED FROM THE ICONES OF HALLER, EXHIBITING THE PARTS AS THEY APPEAR ON DISSECTION. Boston: Thomas B. Wait and Co. for the proprietor, 1813. 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches in contemporary tree calf binding; 156, [15] pages; 15 color plates (some folded). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, with the text translated from Haller's Icones Anatomicae ([1743]-56), substantially revised by Warren, and with woodcuts engraved by Josiah Foster Flagg (1788-1853), a dentist and noted American anatomical illustrator. A very early example of an American medical book with hand-colored plates. Warren was a founder of the New England Journal of Medicine and the third president of the American Medical Association. Condition

Wear and chipping to the joints and edges and some loosening in the binding; front free endpage cut but retains inked names of early owner. Hand-colored plates, including foldouts, complete and generally Very Good.
