Lot Description

Drake, Daniel and Wright, Guy. THE WESTERN MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL JOURNAL. July, 1827 - April, 1835 (non-consecutive and not complete). Cincinnati: Hatch and Nichols, 1827 - 1835. 2 Volumes comprising approximately 16 issues of this early Ohio Valley medical publication; bound in matching crude 19th C. linen cloth with "Medical Journal" stamped to the spines. The prospectus is bound in and cites the title as, "The Western Medical and Physical Journal Original and Eclectic." Daniel Drake (1785-1852) was, of course, the leading figure in the development of medical practice in the Ohio Valley for over 4 decades. According to Coyle, "Drake's total extant writings - books, essays, editorials, book reviews, etc. - amount to over 3,000 items." (Coyle, p. 178.) Garrison calls this journal “the most important medical periodical of the West in its time” (Garrison, Hist. Med., p. 441). Contains a number of Drake papers.

Condition

8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches; and 9 by 5 1/2 inches -- one volume with later private collector's bookplate; toning and handling wear to the covers. The contents show intermittent foxing and toning but are generally fresh.
