Morton, Richard. PHTHISIOLOGIA: OR, A TREATISE OF CONSUMPTIONS. Wherein the difference, nature, causes, signs and cure of all sorts of consumptions are explained ... : of original consumptions from the whole habit of the body, of an original consumption of the lungs, of symptomatical consumptions, or such as are the effects of some other distempers : illustrated by particular cases ... with a compleat table of the most remarkable things. London: Printed for W.and J. Innys at the Prince's Arms the West end of St. Paul's Churchyard, 1720. The Second Edition Corrected. 8 by 5 inches in an 18th C. full paneled calf with blind tooling and 5 raised bands to the spine. Richard Morton (1637–1698) was an English physician who was the first to state that tubercles were always present in the tuberculosis disease of the lungs. In Morton's time, this wasting disease was termed consumption, or by its Greek name of phthisis. Recognition of the many possible symptoms of this infection belonging to a single disease was not until the 1820s and it was J.L. Schonlein in 1839 who introduced the term "tuberculosis". (Wikipedia). Complete in [8], 360, [16] pp.; with engraved portrait frontispiece. See Garrison-Morton 3216 for first edition which was printed in 1694. This copy with the early manuscript owner's name on front free endpage: "Dr. Morton's Phthisiologia, James Brown His Book 1743;" and on the verso of the portrait, "Samuel Brown His Book."

With rubbing and wear, heavy at the joints and corners which are rubbed raw; covers show beginning of separation but still strongly sewn; contents with persistent toning and foxing, Good condition.
