Lot Description

Bigelow, Jacob. AMERICAN MEDICAL BOTANY, BEING A COLLECTION OF THE NATIVE MEDICINAL PLANTS OF THE UNITED STATES, CONTAINING THEIR BOTANICAL HISTORY AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS, AND PROPERTIES AND USES IN MEDICINE, DIET AND THE ARTS, WITH COLORED ENGRAVINGS. Boston: Cummings and Hilliard, 1817 - 1820. The first botanical book published in the U.S. and often described as the first "color-printed" book in America. NISSEN 164; REESE, STAMPED WITH A NATIONAL CHARACTER, 10. 3 volumes, 10 by 7 inches, bound in contemporary tree calf with gilt printed red leather labels to the spines.

Condition

Ex-library with fairly minimal library indications -- plates not marked and with original coloring strong. Lower board of volume 1 separated. With 59 of 60 color plates -- lacking plate VIII in Volume I.
