- Lot Description
Photograph maquette, 10 x 19 in. (sight), serving as the original layout for the Mathew Brady Studio composite image titled Union Cavalry Leaders and Raiders. Comprised of 12 albumen CDVs of officers, trimmed, each mounted on scallop-edged white card, and ink identified, including: William Wood Averell, Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, August Valentine Kautz, John Irvin Gregg, Philip D. Sheridan, George Armstrong Custer, Abel D. Streight, Benjamin Henry Grierson, James Wilson, George Stoneman, Wesley Merritt, and Alfred Thomas Torbert. Ca 1864. Professionally matted and framed, 17 x 26.25 in.
Exceedingly rare, one-of-a-kind Brady Gallery maquette used to produce the CDV-sized photographic collage that was sold to the public at the height of the Civil War.
Condition
Not examined outside frame. Kilpatrick image a bit light. Otherwise very fine, rich tonality. Few mounts appear to be partially separated from backing, including Kilpatrick and Merritt. Some light spotting on inked label. With slight imperfection in paper backing near the inked label. Otherwise near excellent condition overall.
All with fading and wear. Some small tears and losses.
