Printed broadside, 18.5 x 24.75 in., framed, 19.75 x 25.75 in. Salem Rifle Company! Salem, MA: n.p., n.d., ca August 1861. The broadside calls for men to join the "Rifle Company for the 19th (Rifle) Regiment" of Massachusetts, stating that the "Regiment will be one of the best in the service." Signed in type by N.W. Osborne.
The 19th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Schouler, Lynnfield, having for its nucleus the 1st Battalion Rifles. By August 28, 1861, the entire regiment had been mustered into the service with Colonel Edward W. Hinks as its commander. The 19th MA was engaged in several significant battles during the war, including the Siege of Yorktown, Seven Pines, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and most notably, Gettysburg, where the regiment helped repulse Pickett's Charge. In the fight, the 19th MA captured four Confederate regimental flags, which Devereux personally delivered to his brigade commander after the battle. Five men from the 19th MA were awarded the Medal of Honor for their role in repulsing Pickett's Charge: Major Edward Rice, Color Sergeant Benjamin F. Falls, Sergeant Benjamin H. Jellison, Private John H. Robinson, and Corporal Joseph H. De Castro. The regiment lost 9 killed, 60 wounded, and 8 missing at Gettysburg, but went on to fight in more than a dozen battles, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Appomattox, before mustering out on June 30, 1865.
