Maryland Hepplewhite Fall Front Secretary Bookcase
American (possibly Maryland), early 19th century. A secretary and bookcase in two parts, of cherry with poplar secondary, the upper case with line inlay around the doors opening to reveal a shelved and fitted interior, the lower case with a drop-front desk over four drawers, the desk having a fitted interior; ht. 85, wd. 35.75, dp. 20 in.
A typed note, taped inside the upper right drawer says, A Tilghman family piece. Was the property of William Tilghman Chief Justice of Pennsylvania when John Adams was president of the U.S. From Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, William Tilghman (1756 –1827) was a lawyer, politician, jurist and statesman from Maryland.... After some years of private practice, he was appointed as a justice to the Philadelphia and state courts. In 1805, he was named as Chief Justice on the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court, where he served from 1806 to 1827. In 1811, when Tilghman ran for Governor of Pennsylvania, which had abolished slavery in 1780, he began to emancipate his slaves. He was not elected.
