Martin Rettig is the younger brother of the well-known painter John Rettig. Martin led a fruitful career as a Rookwood decorator, though he also gained a reputable as a painter of floral still lifes, as this work demonstrates. He was a student of Frank Duveneck and later became an authority on the master's oeuvre. He was also an integral of the local cultural community, notably presiding over the Cincinnati Art Club from 1918 to 1920.
