Frame containing 11 ambrotypes and/or tintypes, including 10 sixth plate portraits and a single quarter plate outdoor view of the family home. Acquired together with a 3.5 x 4.5 in. photograph on slightly larger mount showing members of the David & Ellen Marshall family gathered at the Marshall home in southwest Ohio, ca 1890s. A savvy customer has pointed out that the painting in the background of the paper photograph appears to be a variation on (or copy after) Godfrey N. Frankenstein's painting of the Great Miami River at Cleves. It has been determined that some of the subjects pictured in the paper photo are likely shown as young children in the tintype and ambrotype portraits housed in the frame. The home at center is almost certainly the Marshall family farmstead, supposedly still standing today.
The Marshalls were a notable family in Oxford, Ohio. David and Ellen's son, Charles L. Marshall, (1876-1953) was a prominent funeral director, Oxford Village councilman, and Treasurer of the building campaign for the United Presbyterian Church according to an obituary in the Middletown Journal. He married his second wife, Edna Ramsey, on October 18, 1905, and they farmed in Preble County for several years before moving to Oxford and purchasing the old Samuel Gath Funeral Home in 1920. They operated it as Marshall Funeral Home on West Church Street until 1946. Charles and Edna are buried in West Point Cemetery. Edna's obituary appears in an issue of the Hamilton Journal from April 8, 1966.
Except for top and bottom left portraits (top left has crackling, bottom left has major flaking) ambrotypes/tintypes in fine condition, protected by frame. Loose photograph with some wear at edges and small spot of discoloration at right edge.
