Small scroll, approx. 5.5 x 276 in., comprised of 20 panels, 5.5 x 14 in., glued together to form the scroll. Several inches of the first part (outside wrap) are heavily toned and much has chipped away (est. 4 in. or so). The last 8.5 14 in. panels are blank on both sides; the last 10 14 in. panels are blank on the herb side, but have Bible lessons. (Thus ten panels with both sides filled in.)
On one side are descriptions of common folk remedies, for use for both people and a few for horses (very common - many almanacs and periodicals had more horse treatments than human ones). The first is too fragmentary, followed by references to Snakeroot, colt's foot, swallow wort, squaw root, blue berry cohosh or blue ginseng, goosefoot, healall, spleen(?) wort, swamp leather wood, fleabane, blooming spurge, crowfoot or spotted crane's bill, Western dropwort, pennyroyal, liverwort, maple leaf alum root, golden seal and poison henbane. Each with English, French and German names, plant description, parts used, type of use (tincture, poultice, etc.), conditions for which it was used, and frequency of use (every three hours, once a day, etc.). In many cases, American Indian uses are also given. The inclusion of Western dropwort gives a clue to the origin of this, since its range is west of the Allegheny Mountains, from Ohio and West Virginia to Missouri and Louisiana. (It likes poor, gravely soils, but not alluvium). This suggests a pioneering owner, one maybe some distance from the medical resources of larger towns and cities.
The other side includes Bible verses and wisdom that do not appear to be related to the plants in any way. Possibly belonging to a young woman, since these were important things for girls to know - Christian values to raise good, moral children and common remedies since women were generally the first-line healers (in many times and places).
