One of the best known and most influential African American leaders in history, Malcolm X, the founder the Organization of Afro-American Unity, was assassinated at a rally for the organization in New York on February 21, 1965. A controversial figure up until his death, Malcolm X was a popular and charismatic advocate for African American rights. He was not only respected by influential groups such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), but he also played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the Black Power Movement.
