Seward, Anna (1747-1809). Monody on Major Andre. By Miss Seward. (Author of the Elegy on Capt. Cook.) To Which Are Added Letters Addressed to her by Major Andre, in the year 1769. Lichfield: Printed and Sold by J. Jackson for the Author, M.DCC.LXXXI (1781). Approx 7.75 x 9 in., iv., 47pp. Signed in ink by the author at the end of the poem on p. 28.
British Romantic poet and novelist Anna Seward, also known as the "Swan of Lichfield," was a prominent writer and prolific literary correspondent. Her adopted sister, Honoria Sneyd, was briefly engaged to British Army officer John Andre who was hanged in 1780 by the Continental Army as a spy for assisting the treasonous efforts of Benedict Arnold. In this early work Seward reflects upon Andre, who had admirers on both sides of the Atlantic, and directs outrage against George Washington.
