Mine Crater at Wytschaete, Messines Ridge
watercolor
signed l.r., M Rautin, inscribed l.r., "Un Cratere" a Wytschaete
framed, 7.75 x 4.5 in. (sight)
Depicts a large crater in the ground with men spotting the rim and debris in the background.
World War I had many Belgian battle sites, including Messines and Wytschaete, both involved in one of the most remarkable scenes of the war. The Battle of Messines was notable for the use of explosives by British troops, planted underground by tunneling units and detonated at the start of the battle in June, 1917. Some eyewitnesses described the event using the phrase, "pillars of fire." Nineteen large craters were formed by the explosives, and this joint detonation event was said to have been one of the largest non-nuclear explosions of all time. In the evening before the battle, General Sir Charles Harrington was believed to have stated, "Gentlemen, we may not make history tomorrow, but we shall certainly change the geography." This painting offers a unique portrayal of that changed landscape.
