Due to the popularity of military subjects, artists looked for new ways to depict the realities of war. One successful method was to paint the aftermath of particular battles or skirmishes, utilizing memory and imagination to recreate the scenes. Lieutenant Harry Van Der Weyden, ROI served with the British Royal Engineers as Camouflage Officer and exhibited the original version of Trenches North of Lens, 1918 in the Camouflage Exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1919. Liss Llewellyn Fine Art claims the original oil painting, while this version is a watercolor. Liss Llewellyn lists two known watercolor studies of the work, which have slight variations, last known to be in the Imperial War Museum. This piece could be a study of the original painting, but that cannot be confirmed.
