French, ca 1777. A set of six knives, originally from a set of eighteen, with silver blades and mother of pearl handles. Each with mark of charge for Paris, mark of discharge (illegible), mark of maison commune. Housed in a later, presentation case; knife lg. 7.75 in. (each).
The lot is accompanied by a note on provenance, written on the stationary of Mrs. Charles F. Harrison. Mrs. Harrison, neé Mary Arthur Fendall, is a direct descendant of Richard Henry Lee (1732-1794), notable Virginia statesman and Arthur Lee's brother. According to this note, the knives were left by Arthur to his niece Anne (Richard's daughter).
According to family tradition, this set was presented to Arthur Lee (1740-1792) when he was received by King Louis XVI at the French court, between 1776 and 1778. Lee, a Virginia native, studied law in London. During the American Revolution, he served as an official representative of the colonies in Great Britain and France, while also spying on their behalf. He also served the Continental Congress, first as a representative in Spain and Prussia, and later as a delegate from Virginia.
